RECREATION SUPERVISOR
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Under general supervision of the City Manager or designee, promotes, organizes and coordinates recreation and community activities in the City with operating responsibility for a large segment of the recreation and public programs; does related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is important professional work involving responsibility for planning, organizing overseeing and supervising one or more major segments of the community’s recreation facilities and programs, i.e., playground, athletics, recreation and community centers, pool, events etc. This position involves the general oversight, coordination and if needed supervision of recreation/ community and programs and events. There is also a general responsibility for planning, promoting and publicizing the general program in close cooperation with the City Manager or designee Supervision, either direct or general, may be exercised over subordinate level employees.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative Only)
Assists in planning for the athletic and/or playground program, pool program, community events and for other activities as assigned;
Prepares publicity and news releases meets with groups and organizations for recreational programs;
Plans researches and prepares applications for funding for facilities and programs;
Consults, advises and gives appropriate direction;
Schedules and directs playground, athletic activities and community events;
Plans and promotes special activities or events;
Assists outside groups with planning and coordination of activities at City facilities;
Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports;
Supervises and assists with the maintenance, construction and repair of facilities and equipment;
Organizes the program of and directs recreation center;
Gives instructions in one or more specialized fields of activity;
Acts as a sports official when needed;

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Working knowledge of governmental accounting, procurement and budgetary procedures; Working Knowledge of public administration, budget preparation, operating reports and funding opportunities; Good knowledge of public information, public relations techniques and promotion of public programs;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either
A: Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Bachelor’s degree and three years supervisory experience; OR
B: Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Bachelor’s degree with a New York State Teaching Certification; OR
C: Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Associates’ degree in business administration or recreation and five years supervisory experience.
D: An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B) and (C) above.

COMMUNITY ACTIVITY CENTER MANAGER
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position involves
responsibility for managing the operation of a recreational facility or community
center and performing semi-skilled maintenance and repairs, including but not
limited to all building activities at the recreational facility or community center, the
lounge, gym, bowling lanes, pin setting equipment, etc. The work is performed under the administrative direction of the City Manager or designee with some leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work. Direct supervision is exercised over all assigned staff. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Performs semi-skilled maintenance and repairs to the interior of the recreational
facility or community center and equipment associated with recreational
areas, including but not limited to the lounge area, the repair, maintenance
and conditioning of bowling lanes, pin setting equipment, concession
stands, gymnasium, etc.;
Inspects the recreational facility or community center building and grounds to
ensure that appropriate repairs and maintenance are reported, scheduled
and completed;
Utilizes a variety of tools and equipment, including hand tools, floor cleaning
solutions and cleaning equipment;
Schedules, leads and participates in the work of recreational facility or
community center staff;
Schedules working hours to assure adequate staffing and maintains time
and attendance records;
Assists with in-house training of personnel;
Creates and maintains basic records and reports associated with the work
performed;
Schedules activities for patrons, members, league members for bowling, a gym
and lounge area;
Maintains order and enforces regulations;
Contacts vendors and/or orders supplies as required;
Collects tickets, fees, and admission charges and reconcile sales receipts;
Deposits monies collected and keep records and reports for verification
Maintains grounds, including mowing and reseeding grass and filling in holes
where appropriate.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONNEL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of the common materials, practices, tools and terminology and
safety precautions associated with maintaining a recreational facility
containing bowling lanes, concession stands, lounge and a gym.
Working knowledge of municipal ordinances related to recreational facilities;
Working knowledge of business arithmetic;
Ability to safely and effectively use tools and operate equipment related to the
maintenance and repair of a recreational facility or community center,
bowling lanes, gym, and concession stand and related equipment.
Ability to prepare reports and keep simple records;
Ability to prepare annual budget for submission to City Manager;
Responsible for the implementation and monitoring of budgeted funds;
Ability to participate in assigned work and lay-out the work of others;
Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions;
Physical condition commensurate with the physical demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma; AND
Two years experience managing a community center which shall have included the maintenance and minor repairing of mechanical devices, such as, bowling lanes and pin setting equipment, gymnasium and related buildings and grounds.
OR
An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits stated above.
NOTE:
Ability to successfully complete a certification for repairing facility equipment as prescribed by the City.
2010 salary range $41,000 - $43,998
